Starting a self-improvement journey can be daunting. You have this deep desire to grow, evolve, and become a better person, but where on earth do you even begin?
You might already know what you want to work on but not exactly how to do it. Or you may not even have the slightest clue what to focus on first. You just know you could do with some improvements.
Maybe you know what you want and have some sort of idea about how to get it, but the whole thing seems too overwhelming to even start.
Or, you might have gone through this exact process before but struggled to stick to your plan and abandoned ship somewhere along the way.
Whatever your situation might be, this post has you covered, girl!
What is personal growth all about?
It’s important to understand that personal growth will look completely different for everyone. What your journey involves isn’t necessarily what the next person may experience.
Although personal development means different things to different people, it’s about enjoying the process of evolving and becoming a better you.
Your self-improvement journey is highly personal and unique to you. Keep this in mind as you move through the process.
In a nutshell, personal growth can mean:
• Working on yourself through improving your character, behavior, habits, skills, and capabilities.
• Growing into the happiest, healthiest, most loving, and enlightened version of you.
• Working on being the best version of you, not only for yourself but also for the people around you.
• Transforming yourself in meaningful areas of your life such as the physical, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, financial, and/or social.
• Setting boundaries with yourself, cultivating discipline, challenging old patterns, and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.
• Realizing your potential, getting out of your own way, and going after your dreams.
• Releasing anything that no longer serves you.
• Learning how to build the life you dream of.
• Getting to know yourself and who you really are.
Here are some examples for inspiration:
– Overcoming your procrastination to improve your productivity
– Improving your self-esteem and confidence
– Cultivating self-love and compassion
– Developing skills or learning new things
– Working on your mindset and cultivating positivity
– Learning how to process emotions
– Cultivating self-awareness
– Improving physical and mental health
– Working on your negative traits and weaknesses
– Improving your strengths
– Incorporating good habits/behaviors into your life
– Working on personal qualities such as kindness, patience, and punctuality
Why is personal growth so important?
Through this process, you could:
• Develop new skills and abilities to help you achieve new goals and dreams
• Get out of a rut you’ve been stuck in
• Realise your true potential
• Uncover new things about yourself you weren’t aware of before
• Improve your relationships with others
• Expand your perspective and improve your mindset
• Overcome obstacles you’ve struggled with
• Find peace and contentment
• Share your gifts with the world
• Build and live a meaningful, authentic, and fulfilling life
We are all amazing just as we are, but there’s always room for improvement and new ways to be a better human.
So, let’s move on to the ‘how’…
Prepare yourself…
The unfortunate reality is that growth doesn’t just happen by accident. It would be great to just wake up one day and already be the best version of yourself, but that’s not going to just happen. Or even happen overnight, for that matter.
Growth requires effort, discipline, and consistency. Not to mention, change is dang hard. You need to have the desire to make a change and the willingness to put in the work to make it happen. This is a process, a lifelong project if you will, and all good things take time.
Being dedicated to your own growth and being prepared to step out of your comfort zone are essential ingredients for this process to work. It’s also not going to be all sunshine and rainbows all the time. It could get really challenging sometimes.
However, the fact that you are here, reading this post, means that you are curious about yourself. It means you have some courage locked away somewhere and are willing to take responsibility for yourself. That’s amazing!
So let’s get to it..

- Determine what your life looks like now
The first step is to find your starting point. To achieve a goal, you must first be clear on the current situation or where you’re starting from.
It’s kind of like using a map to get somewhere you want to go – how will you get there if you don’t know where you are now?
Assess each area of your life to paint an overall picture of what your life looks like now. How satisfied are you in each area? Where do you feel the most stuck? Which areas have you been neglecting, and which need some attention?
2. What part do you play?
This is where some accountability and self-awareness come into the equation.
Reflect on the reasons why you are where you are now. How might your beliefs, thought patterns, habits, default patterns, and behaviors contribute to your current situation? What has caused you to be in this position, and what’s keeping you there?
Determining the part you play in your own life is empowering and will give you invaluable perspective when it comes time to determine solutions.
3. Look to your values for guidance
According to the dictionary, values are “principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life.” Exploring your values can help you to paint a clearer picture of what’s important to you and what you want to achieve. This can be used as a guide when creating your personal growth plan.
4. Brainstorm
Now that you have done some groundwork make a list of improvements you could make in each of your life areas. A few questions to guide and inspire you:
What is your purpose in life?
Who are you?
What do you want out of life?
What is most important to you?
What would make you happiest in life?
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses?
What does a day in your dream life look like? Who would you have to be to live that life?
Imagine yourself as the best version of you; how does this person differ from you right now?
What does becoming a better person mean to you?
What is currently making you unhappy?
What habits/behaviors do you want to give up?
What habits/behaviors could you start that would benefit you?
What do you want out of this personal growth journey?
How do you want to feel in each area of your life?

5. Choose key areas to focus on
Narrow it down by picking a few key areas to focus on. Where do you feel the most drawn to grow? In which area are you most excited to make a change? What changes would be most beneficial to you? What parts of your life need the most attention right now?
6. Set your personal development goals
Now it’s time to set actual goals – pick one or two goals from your brainstorm that you would like to focus on.
7. Break it down
Goals are great because they provide direction and motivation. But how do you go about achieving them? You need an action plan! The first step to creating one of those is breaking your big goals down into smaller chunks. You will use these milestones to develop your plan.
It’s time to brainstorm again! For each goal, write a list of things you could do to bring you closer to that goal. What are some helpful habits that could help you? What would you have to give up? List everything you could do to accomplish this goal.
For example, if your goal is to improve fitness, your action items might include following a regular exercise routine, eating healthy meals, and getting enough rest.
Breaking this down further would look like scheduling your workouts in your diary or hiring a trainer, planning your meals and meal prepping in advance, and setting aside enough downtime or getting enough sleep.
Keep breaking the goal down until you have a list of manageable action steps.
8. Plan it
Use your brainstorming from the previous exercise to narrow down your approach and pick the actionable steps that you will build into a plan to achieve your goal.
These will be your “keystone” habits or actions that you will rely on throughout your journey.
9. Ask yourself why? What do these improvements mean to you?
Getting clear on your reasons why will give your goals and journey meaning. Finding the root of the real reasons you want what you want will help you down the line when you lack motivation and need to remind yourself what you’re working towards.
But you need to be honest with yourself to get there.
Visualize your desired outcome and simply ask yourself, “why?” Write down your answer. Again, keeping this answer in your mind, ask yourself, “why?” Make a note of your response. Repeat this process until you feel you have dug deep enough and found something that resonates with you.
Surface-level responses are often not the real reasons for wanting something and will probably not help you stay accountable when you feel like giving up.

10. Obstacles and solutions
What are the potential obstacles you might face? How will you overcome them? Exploring this now will help you prepare and plan for potential obstacles and decide how to react to them in advance.
It can also be very useful to write yourself a meaningful reminder about why you started to give yourself some perspective and motivation when you feel like quitting.
11. Track your progress and check in with yourself regularly
A goal check-in is an essential part of the process. Firstly, it allows you to evaluate your progress. Secondly, it reminds you of what you’re working so hard towards. Thirdly, it will enable you to determine what you need to do to stay on track.
Track your progress and check in with yourself to assess what has been working for you and what hasn’t. Allow yourself to revise your goals if necessary.
12. Schedule your plan
Setting goals and having a plan is just the start. Achieving a goal really comes down to doing the work you plan to do.
To stay true to your intentions, make sure you plan accordingly.
A diary can help you organize and schedule your actionable steps. This will ensure you use your time wisely, stay on track with your goals, start each week prepared, and know what to expect.
So that’s that – your full-proof guide to starting your personal growth journey. We hope this post has inspired you to get started right away on being your best self!
