30 Easy & Simple Self-Care Ideas When You Don’t Feel Like Doing Anything

What if I told you that self-care could be simple? And effortless? And not time-consuming at all?

The amazing thing about self-care is that it doesn’t have to involve extensive, lavish, and complicated methods of caring for yourself. Yup, you read that right!

I’m a huge advocate for self-care. Over time, I’ve learned that it’s crucial for mental health and overall wellbeing and vital for a healthy and happy life.

But let’s be honest. Sometimes, the thought of doing anything (let alone practicing self-care) is just a drag. I get it. I’ve been there, and I know the feeling.

When I’m having a bad day or feeling low, I just want to curl up in a ball and ignore the world. The last thing I want to do is put effort into being nice to myself.

But I think that it’s during these times that you need to focus on “me-time” the most. And guess what, you’ll always feel better for it.

So how do you take care of yourself on those low days when you have almost zero energy to do anything?

In this post, I give you 30 ideas for simple and almost no-effort self-care activities to help you when you really don’t feel like doing a thing.

1. Take a day off work and don’t feel bad about it

Sometimes taking a day off to rest or spend time doing things you love is all you need to give yourself that well-deserved break and recharge your proverbial battery.

2. Say “no”

This can be tough because, as a human, you naturally want to make others happy. But if you’re already stressed, overworked, or exhausted, saying “no” to extra and possibly unnecessary things is important.

Self-care isn’t selfish. Use that time to focus on caring for yourself instead.

3. Watch your favorite series or have a movie marathon.

Whenever I need a pick-me-up, but I don’t feel like doing anything, I play old episodes of “Friends” or “Impractical Jokers,” or I watch my favorite movie, “The Other Woman,” for the 58 millionth time. Either way, I end up in hysterical laughter every time!

4. Indulge in a favorite meal or treat

Whether that’s a pizza, a healthy smoothie, or a giant cookie and ice-cream, food can be a brilliant way to show yourself some love.

It’s important to emphasize that your needs may change. What might count as self-care today (nutrient-packed smoothie, for example) might be different from what you consider self-care tomorrow (a bowl of ice-cream).

It’s all about balance and being able to recognize your needs.

5. Take a long hot bubble bath

Or enjoy a steamy shower with your favorite decadent bath products. Setting aside quiet time to wind down is essential to your mental wellbeing.

6. Listen to a podcast or motivating speech

These can offer a different perspective, some insight into a problem you’re facing, or simply put a smile on your face. My favorites are “The Health Code,” “The Mel Robbins Podcast” and “The Mindset Mentor.”

You’re welcome!

7. Stretch or move your body

Go for a little walk, do a few “cat-cows,” or give your neck a stretch. Focus on what you can do in your current energy range. A little movement can do wonders for your body and your mind.

8. Enjoy a warm drink

Brew a mug of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. Whatever warm drink brings you joy! Be mindful while drinking it, and savor every last sip.

9. Do some breath work to connect to your body

There are so many simple breathing techniques that can help to lift your mood and ease anxiety. Experiment with a couple to see which ones work best for you.

10. Open a window or sit outside

Smell the plants, trees, and flowers around you. Breathe some fresh air into your lungs and feel how good it feels. An oxygen increase could help really improve your mood and energy level.

11. Sit in the sun (safely) and/or immerse yourself in nature

Vitamin D is essential to your health and wellbeing and the experience of nature’s stillness can help ease stress, reduce anxiety and improve your mood. Listen to the birds, watch the clouds and admire the beauty of what you see.

12. Make sure you’re staying hydrated

Drink a BIG glass of water. Add some fruit, lemon, or a few cucumber slices if you feel like it.

13. Make your bed or change your sheets

I don’t care what anyone says; there’s nothing better than fresh bedding!

14. Take a nap

Draw the curtains, make a comfy nest for yourself and get to resting!

15. Believe it or not, certain smells can help

Smell scents known to boost your mood or relax you, depending on what you need (try citrus, vanilla, or lavender scents).

16. Listen to upbeat music that makes you feel good

There’s nothing quite like dancing and singing along to your favorite tunes, pretending to be Beyonce in your own little shower concert.

This releases feel-good hormones, which can help to improve your mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Not to mention, it’s like, super fun!

17. Laugh

Laughter can help lessen stress, depression, and anxiety, boost your mood and make you happy. Watch some comedy or find some funny videos online.

18. Pay attention to your body and what you may be feeling

Give your body a few minutes of mindful awareness by doing a full body scan. Consider where you may be holding any tension or emotion. Or do a mini meditation if you’re up for it.

19. Turn off your phone for a few hours

A break from social media, demands from others, and meaningless texts could only do you good.

20. Spoil yourself

Splurge on some new make-up or a pair of shoes, get your nails done, or go out and do something you’ve wanted to do for a while. Treat yourself!

21. Book a massage or spa day if your budget allows

Or simply opt for a home made facemask.

22. Cuddle a loved one or pet

Hugs and cuddles cause the release of feel-good hormones like oxytocin and serotonin, which can instantly improve your mood and lower your stress.

23. Watch a sunset or sunrise

I’ve never met a sunset or sunrise I didn’t like! They always leave me feeling in awe of the beauty of life.

24. Call a friend, family member, or a loved one for a quick chat

Sometimes the sound of your favorite person’s voice is all you need to feel better.

25. Read something that interests or inspires you

26. Be creative

Colour in, paint, doodle, just express yourself however you feel like.

27. Journal

Write down anything that you’re feeling or anything bothering you by journaling your thoughts for just 10 minutes. Getting your thoughts out of your head and onto paper can do wonders for your mental wellbeing.

28. Think of one thing you are grateful for right now

I know there can be times when it feels like nothing is working out, but there is always something to be thankful for. It could be as simple as having a roof over your head, food in the fridge, or having eyes to watch those cute birdies make nests outside your window.

29. Think of one thing you love about yourself

Again, I know this might be hard to do, but you are an amazing person, and there are so many loveable things about you. It could be that you’re really patient, that you have a kind heart or that really quirky habit you have that your mom adores.

30. Write down one thing you have to look forward to

It could be an event, a goal you’ve set for yourself, or even what you’re having for dinner. It doesn’t have to be specific or set in stone; it could just be that you’re looking forward to better days.

And there you have it – 30 ideas for easy and almost effortless self-care activities!
