Today I’m going to show you exactly how to build a vision board that will help you achieve your wildest dreams!
There are so many ways to create a vision board, but as someone who’s gone through this process more times than I can count (self-proclaimed vision board junkie over here), I’ve found a method that’s worked pretty well for me in terms of setting intentions that align with my values and helping me ultimately achieve my goals.
In this beginner’s guide, I’m sharing my simple three-step method for creating a powerful vision board that works for you.
What is a vision board?
A vision board is a powerful visualization tool that can be essential to attain your dream life. A vision board is a visual representation of your goals, dreams, desires, ambitions, and aspirations. It’s a unique collection of inspiring and motivating pieces (pictures, drawings, quotes, affirmations, other items, etc.) that visually represent your vision and what you want to achieve.
Why do you need a vision board?
The first step to achieving something you want is by setting clear intentions, and a vision board is an excellent way to do that. Some people might prefer to write their goals down, but I feel that the experience of using a vision board is far more powerful.
A vision board can also:
- Help you clarify what it is that you want or want to change
- Guide you towards understanding your values and what’s important to you
- Remind you of your intentions, what you’re working towards, and in which direction you’re going
- Motivate, encourage, inspire, and excite you
- Help you feel the feelings associated with your dream life
I’ve had plenty of failed attempts at achieving goals in the past, many of them simply due to a lack of motivation and forgetting why I started in the first place. There’s no better solution to those dilemmas than a vision board!
Do they work (and how)?
Research shows that visualization (or mental imagery) is a powerful technique that can be used to help you achieve a specific result. It’s your potential ability to create or influence an outcome that you can’t physically see just yet. And yep, there’s plenty of scientific research to back it up!
Think about it… Everything that exists today because of human creation was once just an idea. Even the phone or computer you’re reading this post from was once just a thought in someone’s mind. I don’t know about you, but that’s frickin’ mind-blowing to me.
One of the most potent benefits of visualization is helping you reframe or reprogram your mindset, which directly affects your ability to achieve any goal.
Let’s take a closer look by reverse engineering the situation:
You want a specific outcome… Achieving that outcome requires inspired action or particular behaviors… Behind those actions and behaviors lies a specific mindset, the foundation of which is directly affected by your thoughts and feelings… And what can influence thoughts and feelings? VISUALIZATION
Still not quite convinced? Please take a minute to Google what celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Jim Carrey, and Will Smith have to say about their experiences and what impact visualization had on their lives.
What should you put on your vision board?
The sky is the limit, but here are some vision board ideas, examples, and inspiration:
- Fitness, health, and body goals
- Travel goals
- Lifestyle aesthetic
- Career, business, and money aspirations
- Relationship/love goals
- Personal development goals
- Anything that inspires, excites, motivates you, and gives you that “dream life” feel
So how do you create and use this vision board? Here is my simple yet effective three-step process…
STEP 1: Get clear on your grand vision
Pick 2-3 life areas so that you can really maximize your focus. Within those categories, list everything you want or want to change about your life. I suggest picking a specific time frame (within the next few months to a year, as anything grander or further than that could seem overwhelming. The key is to decide on a few things you feel are achievable but still challenging). Next to each item, write down any positive emotions associated with the outcome or how achieving your goal would make you feel. These positive emotions will supercharge your vision board.

STEP 2: Create your beautiful board
My favorite part is picture-hunting time! It’s time to gather visual materials that represent your vision. Decide if you’d prefer a digital or physical board and how you’re going to make it. Pinterest or Canva are both great options to quickly create something eye-catching. Pinterest is great if you want to keep adding to your board as you find new inspiration or have multiple themes you want to focus on. Canva is helpful if making a collage is more your cup of tea. Ensure the pictures you select evoke the emotions you listed in the previous step. The goal is to recreate those feelings every time you look at your board.
Feel free to create something totally unique to you, something you can’t wait to immerse yourself in daily. You can use images, quotes, text, or anything that genuinely inspires and motivates you. There are no rules!

STEP 3: How to use your vision board to achieve your dreams
Integrating your new vision board into your daily routine is the secret to using it. Set it as your lock screen, wallpaper, background, or somewhere you can see it regularly. If you’re drawn to the idea of ritualizing the process, set aside a few sacred minutes each day for your visualization practice.
You can choose whether you want to visualize the outcome or the process of each goal. I like to use a combination of both. Experiment with it and see what works best for you.
Before you begin, make sure you are calm, centered and won’t be disturbed. Lighting a candle or burning incense may make the process feel more sacred.
1). As you make your way through the board, feel the feelings that looking at these images evokes, and imagine that you are living in the vision. How does it feel to have achieved this? What do these emotions feel like in your body? Hold the image in your mind and the feelings in your body for as long as you can.
2) Express and feel gratitude for each item on your board as if they were already in your possession. For example, say, “Thank you for my clear skin; I’m so grateful to have such beautiful skin,” and genuinely feel how wonderful that feels.
3) Use affirmations to supercharge your belief that your desires are on their way to you. For example, you could affirm: “I am talented and successful, and I deserve the promotion I just received.”
4) Use the board whenever you need a boost of motivation or inspiration to nudge you toward taking action.
5) Use the “that’s me” method – as you look through your board, recognize each image as if it was taken of you or from your life. This method helps get your mind to believe that you deserve your desires and that they are possible for you.
General top tips:
- Practice your visualizations often and for short periods. The more you practice, the easier it will become to visualize for longer periods or in more detail.
- Make sure your practices are focused and emotionally charged. You need to be super excited about your desires and fully experience the emotions they bring. Close your eyes or listen to music if that helps you.
- Incorporate as much detail as you can into your visualizations. Use as many senses as possible to make the experience vivid. The more specific the goal, the higher your chance of achieving it.
One last thing, you need to honestly believe that you are worthy of your desires and can achieve them. I know this can be hard sometimes, but it’s a vital part of the process. Ironing out any limiting beliefs can help if you feel that might be holding you back.
